February 11th Meeting Update

In Uncategorized on February 19, 2012 by Joan Donovan Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

Pastel demonstration led by Denise Byrnes Graham.

The February demonstration was led by Denise Byrnes Graham of South Weymouth.  Denise is a well known artist who has received many awards at juried shows including the South Shore Art Center Festival and For Pastels Only on Cape Cod.  She gave an interesting overview of her approach to painting landscapes with pastels.

Denise presented a wonderful example of how she approaches working on a winter landscape by showing her techniques for adding the color, shadows and accents to the scene.   Her approach for working from dark to light colors was enlightening. Before we knew it – the plain surface turned into a beautiful pastel painting with great dimension and interest.

Denise provided a nice balance of demonstrating along with interaction with the audience.  Members asked many questions and were thoroughly taken with her talent and method of pastel painting.

November 15th Meeting Update

In Uncategorized on December 4, 2011 by Joan Donovan Tagged: , , , , , , ,

The November demonstration was led by Nancy Howell of Scituate. Nancy is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society (past president), the Copley Society of Art (former Vice-President), the South Shore Art Center, the North River Art Society and the Plymouth Guild of Artists. She provided an engaging explanation of her approach to watercolor painting.

Nancy stepped the members through her “Prism Effect” technique. She explained how this is accomplished by first penciling in three random lines to the painting surface. This created a division of background areas.

We then watched as a blank surface turned into a beautiful watercolor full of life and with the interesting prism technique as part of the picture. Nancy brought the painting to life by carefully choosing complementary colors and a balance of light and dark brush strokes along the way.

Many of Nancy’s beautiful works of art were displayed for viewing and for sale. The demonstration generated great enthusiasm by all for Nancy’s talents and paintings!

We held a raffle for a fine art print, all proceeds from the raffle going to the WAA. The table was decorated with our own carved pumpkin, lots of prints, greeting cards, and paintings for sale!

A special thank you goes out to our members Lois and Alice for helping out!

I hope to see everyone at the next meeting, October 15th 2pm-4pm at the Tufts Library.
